Très,très bien.

I had quite a different experience as a american citizen, marrying a frenchman.

Much easier -- but I think I inadvertently tricked the system. Also, this took place in 2003 when I belive the laws were more lax.

I'll sum it up very quickly, avoiding the gory detail.

I came here to live with him. With full intention of staying, if it worked out.
To me, even though I studied quite a bit of french, I soon found out, during my numerous pre-move visits that textbook & literary french just didn't cut it at the local bistro. So when I planned to move here with him from my state (NYC-yes, I consider it a state onto it's own self), I decided it best to enroll at a french language program at the nearest university -- in Brittany in our case.

I might add, I was a rather "mature" student ! already having a couple of college & grad degrees and a serious profession to my "credit" (good luck getting those things recognized here !!)

Getting the student visas was a snap. Except for the rather long wait in line.
Renewed them for 2 years.
We also got pacsed. (another story)
After the 2 renewals (+pacs ? not sure if that helped) I received a Carte de Resident - good for 10 years. I did not need to leave the country for any of this.

For our subsequent marriage - again I did not have to go back. But I needed to get an alarming number of documents and, in one instance a non-existant document from the US in order to tie the knot. This was very painful. The American Embassy in my provincial city even created for me this non-existant document in order to placate the painfully beaurocratic person at the local Mairie with whom I was organizing the marriage "dossier".

The main problem with this is : the US has state laws which govern marriage. For France, it is one law. (and frequently changing !!)

Very hard to coordinate.

But it all worked out with a lot of patience & humor.

Sorry to leave this with a sad ending, but we are now divorced (extremely easy procedure), but are such good friends; Me, I have a great job in Paris. But not looking forward to renewing my "Carte de Resident" in 2013.

The irony of it all is that it is so much easier to deal with all the beaurocratic procedures when you are not working (all the free time required !) Yet if you come to France, you want to be part of the society, and work !Marietanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2442041485369824282.post-66431423639959641132009-02-27T16:29:00.000+01:002009-02-27T16:29:00.000+01:00Dear Accidental Parisian,I'm new to your blog whic...Dear Accidental Parisian,
I'm new to your blog which I discovered through Chitlins and camembert.
I'm French and my husband is American.
I was wondering if after having been married to MCM for the needed number of years, you were willing to acquire the French citizenship?Isabellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17941076675305356648noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2442041485369824282.post-30915710744761693112009-02-27T16:22:00.000+01:002009-02-27T16:22:00.000+01:00Dear Accidental Parisian,I'm new to your blog whic...Dear Accidental Parisian,
I'm new to your blog which I discovered threw Chitlins and Camembert!
I'm French and my husband is American.
I was wondering if you were willing to eventualy acquire the French citizenship (when you and MCM have been married for enough years so that you can ask for the French citizenship)?Isabellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17941076675305356648noreply@blogger.com
